About Us
In the late 1980’s, Vera Stevens, of Seaburn, was commissioned by the Wearside Historic Churches to compile a study of Silksworth Church and Community.  She began to show slides of her work.  It was at one of these presentations in North Street Methodist Church hall that Pat Burns, the present Chairperson, spoke to her and she remarked that Silksworth was steeped in history.  This inspired Pat to write to the Community Association committee to ask for support in setting up a Silksworth Heritage Group to enlarge on Vera Stevens work.  Coffee mornings were planned and Vera displayed some of her photographs, and the group began without funding.  Two monthly coffee mornings were held, leaving a balance of £2.42.  A “starter” grant of £100.00 was provided by the Council and after a year of coffee mornings, the first AGM was held in April of 1988.  In April of 2003 the group celebrated its fifteenth anniversary with the publication of two books, the first on Leisure and Pleasure and the second, a gold Jubilee book.  Here in 2006, the group continues to flourish.
